RJ Gicewicz ’14 Returns to Nichols School as Boys 16U Hockey Head Coach
Nichols School welcomes RJ Gicewicz ’14 back to campus as the head coach of the boys 16U ice hockey team. A former Division I hockey player and a former assistant captain for Nichols boys prep hockey, Gicewicz also brings collegiate and junior hockey coaching experience to the Vikings’ hockey program.
Most recently, Gicewicz was the Assistant Hockey Coach and Director of Scouting this past season for the Fargo Force in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Gicewicz led the scouting and drafting process for Fargo, scouting many leagues in the United States and Canada including the North American Hockey League, British Columbia Hockey League, and the USPHL NCDC. He also led pre-scout, individual and team skills work, and individual video breakdown.
As a Nichols student, Gicewicz was an assistant captain for the Vikings’ prep hockey team and represented the United States in international tournaments. He later played in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Green Bay Gamblers and competed at the collegiate level at St. Lawrence University.
After two years playing for St. Lawrence, injuries led to Gicewicz transitioning into a student assistant coach/team manager role. Beyond managing stats and video scouting responsibilities, he acted as a liaison between players and coaches and guided team leaders to maintain a positive culture.
In July 2019, Gicewicz joined Fredonia State University in Division III as the assistant men’s hockey coach. He managed all areas of hockey operations including recruiting across the United States and Canada, scouting video, power play, defense, skills and mental training. Gicewicz coached Fredonia’s first-ever SUNYAC Defenseman of the Year and supported players as they finished the year with the second-highest grade-point average of all Fredonia sports teams.
